Joyeux anniversaire mademoiselle

It's one of those days in the fashion and beauty industry. Back in May 1921, Gabrielle 'Coco' Chanel launched Chanel's very first perfume, Chanel No.5. More than ninety years on it is still at the top of most beauty editor's "must-have" list.

Today, one is sold somewhere in the world every 55 seconds.

Chanel changed the face of fashion with her innovative designs which put women in trousers, tweed and outerwear for the first time. She endevoured to change the smell of fragrance too and that is what she achieved. Chanel No.5 is a 'love it' or 'hate it' type smell. Those who love it will wear it for the rest of their lives and those who hate it, no doubt favour one of the other Chanel perfumery creations.

Admittedly, I am in the former crowd, but my favourite smell is still in the Coco family. Coco Mademoiselle is my scent. Subtle and distinctive. Perfect. Even with the £40 price tag. It is Chanel, you know. Totally worth it.

  1. Interestingly enough I was watching a rather trashy feature on GMTV a few months ago and they asked the opinion of a group of rugby players on some different scents and they all said that Chanel no.5 was nice but it reminded them of their mums!!
